MEET THE ARTISAN
AGATHE ASTER
Agathe Aster is a proud Innu woman who speaks Innu-aimun and has lived her whole life in Sheshatshiu. The mother of four, Agathe is a self-taught artist who has been drawing since she was a child.
Agathe started painting with acrylics on canvas five years ago and has been mentored by two other artists in Sheshatshiu as well as her grandmother, who she says has always guided her. Her work reflects her passion for her culture, her land, and Innu traditions. The Innu have been on the land for 6,000 years and some of the designs included in Agathe’s works are based on this long Innu history.
In the last two years, she has been a wilderness guide which has offered her the opportunity to learn more about the land, the water, and the animals which live on the land. Agathe says she paints what inspires her.
